Is President Obama a Good President?

In a July 2014 opinion poll conducted by Quinnipiac University, President Barack Obama was named as one of the worst U.S. leaders since World War Two. Interestingly, however, President Obama shares that title with his predecessor, George W. Bush.

President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. The Nobel committee said that Obama fostered a “new climate” in international relations and lauded his outreach to Muslims across the world.

One of the president’s biggest accomplishments includes passing health care reform, but that has also drawn a lot of criticism. The Affordable Care Act (2010) has dramatically changed health care and insurance, but the nation has differing opinions as to whether it has improved or diminished the quality of care.

There are a few things to consider while looking at the July 2014 poll numbers. Because of modern technology and the rise of the internet, modern presidents are in the public eye much more than their predecessors. With the rise of blog postings and social media, millions of people are able opine about the latest actions of Mr. Obama within minutes of their occurrence.

With this greater scrutiny, there has also arisen a greatest distrust of our leaders in recent decades. This mistrust can also be attributed to President Nixon’s Watergate affair which resulted in Nixon’s resignation, and to other public scandals such as the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

This is all to say that the presidency has changed dramatically since World War Two. Much of the nation disapproves of the actions of our leader, but the same was true of the leader before him and may very well be true of the next President of the United States, too.
