Nowadays, reality TV shows are becoming a trend in the modern TV world. Many cable networks air these reality shows on national TV. The only problem remains; does reality TV depict people in real life? There’s two ways to look at it.
First off, a majority of these shows are staged. For example, “the Bachelor”(or Bachelorette) involves a lot of staging to make it a successful reality dating show where 20 or more women vie for the attention and love of one man (or vice-versa). There has been numerous scenarios where women were told to act in a certain way just to keep the audience off their feet and also to jack up ratings.
Another reality show that clearly depicts that is “World’s Worst Tenants.” The show is about three people working for a property management group who evicts tenants from residential and commercial properties. They are genuinely evictors but the only problem is that all these stories are reenactments of real stories so therefore, it is considered stage.
On the flip side, some reality shows do depict people in real life like the show “Naked and Afraid” which portrays two people, one man and one female, cast off to a remote island or area, to test their ability to survive without food, clothes, water, and shelter for 21 days. There is no reenactment here as these people were put together for one reason and one reason only; to survive. All of their actions here are filmed on a daily basis by the TV crew which depicts their every move. Their survival skills are put to the test as they must deal with all the elements that nature throws at them as well as each other.
Another one is “Survivor” which is a similar reality show except that they’re not naked and that they work in a team of 5 or more.
So to summarize, depending on which reality show you watch, it can be staged or real. But whether it’s fake or real, we all love watching these shows as the new trend in modern TV!!
